Frequently Asked Questions

What is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

Personal Protective Equipment, commonly referred to as “PPE,” is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that can cause workplace injuries or illnesses. Wearing PPE does not restrict you from contracting COVID-19, rather it is one of many safe practices put into place to eliminate some risk in exposure to the virus.

Can I wash disposable PPE?

No, disposable PPE cannot be washed as it is designed to be used only once and by one person. Washing PPE changes its protective qualities or barrier capabilities and it may be rendered ineffective if washed.

Can PPE be reused or shared with other individuals?

Most PPE is designed to be used only once and by one person only prior to proper disposal. This includes 3-ply masks and gloves. Sharing PPE with others is not advised. The protective capabilities of single-use PPE cannot be assured when it is reused by the same person or by more than one person.

How do manufacturers ensure PPE is safe and effective?

Manufacturers are expected to adhere to guidelines set forth by the FDA called the Quality Systems Regulations and Good Manufacturing Practices. This ensures maintaining consistent product quality control in addition to conforming to recognized consensus standards.

Will PPE protect me against a specific disease?

PPE is designed to create a barrier to penetration of substances, solid, liquid, or airborne particles that might carry bacteria or a specific disease. Neither the FDA or manufacturer can guarantee that PPE will protect you from contracting a specific disease. Think of it as a barrier of protection from the spread of infection.
